Winner of the Anskohk Aboriginal Children's Book of the Year Award. Finalist for the TD Canadian Children's Literature Award, the Marilyn Baillie Picture Book Award and the Ruth Schwartz Award In just four days young Shi-shi-etko will have to leave her family and all that she knows to attend residential school.

She spends her last days at home treasuring the beauty of her world -- the dancing sunlight, the tall grass, each shiny rock, the tadpoles in the creek, her grandfather's paddle song. Her mother, father and grandmother, each in turn, share valuable teachings that they want her to remember. And so, Shi-shi-etko carefully gathers her memories for safekeeping.

Richly hued illustrations complement this gently moving and poetic account of a child who finds solace all around her, even though she is on the verge of great loss -- a loss that Indigenous Peoples have endured for generations because of the residential school’s system.

When antibiotics were first discovered in the early twentieth century, it seemed that they would be the answer to people's long struggle against infectious diseases. Over time, pathogens, such as disease-causing viruses and bacteria, have evolved so that they "outsmart" the drugs that are supposed to destroy them. Now many of the medicines that people count on to make them better no longer work. In 'Attack of the Superbugs' the author explains how this happened, the problems it causes worldwide, and what scientists think might be done to overcome the dilemma.

A Bee in a Cathedral uses analogies to demonstrate 100 basic scientific truths and principles in new and exciting ways, describing the unbelievably massive, the inconceivably tiny and the unfathomably complex in everyday terms. Readers will be drawn to the book by its combination of intuitive reasoning and a highly visual presentation style.
The well-known "a bee in a cathedral" analogy describes the size of an atom and its nucleus in understandable terms. The analogy goes that if an atom were expanded to the size of a cathedral, the nucleus would be only about the size of a bee.
Each analogy is explained in direct terms and clearly illustrated. A range of facts and figures -- presented in uniquely accessible "infographics" -- complements the analogies. The book covers a wide array of scientific topics: physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, earth sciences, anatomy and technology.
Informative and engaging, A Bee in a Cathedral gives readers a deeper appreciation of the forces and facts that govern the universe and everything in it.

From the Curio channel: News in Review. Vaccines have long been hailed for preventing the spread of illness and reducing child mortality. But they have their detractors, too. In the case of the recent measles outbreak in North America, health officials blame the spread on a recent wave of so-called anti-vaxers. Is this a natural backlash to the flaws in vaccines or a trend that could have dangerous side effects?

Combining contemporary articles with historical documents, this engaging reader examines the rich history of Canada's Aboriginal peoples through a thematic lens. The 31 articles--of which more than half are original to this volume--explore a diverse range of topics, including identity, treaties, spirituality, federal policy, residential schools, labour, and women's rights. Primary documents accompany each reading to provide students with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the long and complex history of Canada's First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples.

Agency - French program:.Animation and Youth Studio. Reflection is an exploration of Montreal through an abstract lens. Director Sylvie Trouvé examines how reflected images pervade our surroundings, how our senses filter out these ghost images and, finally, how the camera can capture emotions created by a shimmering puddle or a sparkling coloured glass surface. At the same time, Trouvé raises a new awareness of our urban environment. The editing, which animator Theodore Ushev collaborated on in a spirit of mutual emulation, embraces an animation aesthetic that fully respects the filmmaker’s artistic vision. While examining our relationship with images, this exploration of the city blurs the distinction between real-life shots and animation. Indeed, though inspired by reality, the film is thoroughly immersed in the world of animation.
