Roman où l'on découvre les petites et grandes mésaventures d'Ambroise Bukowski, un jeune garçon atypique ayant pris le parti de l'autodérision pour survivre au rejet qu'il essuie régulièrement en raison de sa différence, voire son intelligence. Orphelin de père depuis sa naissance et ayant plusieurs fois déménagé pour suivre sa mère chargée de cours universitaire de ville en ville, Ambroise est bien décidé à changer la donne cette fois-ci et à se refaire une réputation. Or, en trafiquant un peu la réalité (il prétend être très riche et aller à l'école publique par choix), il s'attire de nouveau les moqueries des élèves, dont celles d'un groupe de garçons qui lui font avaler une arachide à son insu alors qu'il a "prétendu" y être dangereusement allergique. Accusant ces voyous d'avoir voulu tuer son fils (puisque son allergie est réelle), Irène retire Ambroise de l'école pour qu'il poursuive sa scolarité par correspondance depuis leur petit appartement situé au sous-sol de la maison d'un gentil couple grecque. Tout semble vouloir s'améliorer, malgré la solitude qui lui pèse, jusqu'à l'arrivée de Cosmo, le fils du propriétaire. Ce dernier, qui vient de terminer une peine de prison, effraie sans le vouloir ses locataires, ce qui n'est pas sans ranimer les inquiétudes d'Irène qui interdit à Ambroise de le fréquenter. Or, il s'avère que ce grand gaillard aime, comme Ambriose, le Scrabble ... [SDM] [SDM]. Un roman miroir savoureux qui fait se rencontrer deux éclopés de la vie autour d'un jeu pour plusieurs ringard quoiqu'il souligne ici la douance de l'un et la fragilité de l'autre. La drôlerie qui se dégage de cette amitié improbable ainsi que l'imperfection des personnages qui évoluent autour d'eux nourrissent d'un humour aigre-doux et touchant ce tableau familial et social singulier. Une belle découverte saupoudrée d'amour (celui d'une mère surprotectrice, d'un "grand-frère" en réhabilitation et d'une jolie rouquine), dont les chapitres sont précédés, de manière amusante des anagrammes du héros (qui ne peut s'empêcher d'en faire!). Petite bémol qui agacera peut-être les plus tatillons: la traduction de certains dialogues en québécois populaire semble à quelques occasions décalée puisque le récit se déroule à Vancouver. Suite: C'est la faute à Mario Lemieux. Félix, seize ans, fait face à la journée la plus importante de sa vie. En effet, c'est aujourd'hui que la Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec procède au repêchage. Malgré son talent indéniable, Félix est conscient que sa petite taille fait peur à plus d'un. C'est donc avec des sentiments contradictoires qu'il se rend avec sa famille et son meilleur ami aux sélections. Le jeune hockeyeur est finalement repêché au troisième tour par l'équipe de Rouyn-Noranda. Cette bonne nouvelle est toutefois assombrie par l'accueil plutôt froid de son nouvel entraîneur et par la présence d'un joueur détestable dont le talent se limite selon Félix à être costaud et riche. L'adolescent n'est pas au bout de ses peines puisque son départ pour Rouyn lui fera revivre la mort de son père, dont il se sent responsable, et minera sa relation amoureuse, sans parler du stress de savoir que ses performances seront désormais scrutées à la loupe et qu'elles seront déterminantes pour juger de son avenir au sein du hockey. Malgré quelques passages un tantinet didactiques sur l'entraînement et le repêchage, ce roman réaliste, émaillé d'expressions québécoises, donne à suivre l'histoire accrocheuse d'un jeune hockeyeur de la Mauricie qui rêve de faire carrière dans la LNH.
